What Is Auditory Processing Disorder?

"An auditory processing problem is present when a person is not able to make full use of a heard signal." (Jack Katz)

Auditory Processing Disorder (ADP) is a disorder of the auditory centers in the brain. The deficit of the way the auditory information is processed or interpreted.

Personalized evaluation and intervention is important, when APD is suspected. While the cause of APD is not known, chronic ear infections or trauma to the head are conditions that often cause processing issues. Early intervention is key, because auditory deficits can negatively impact speech, language and self esteem, as well as academic performance. Audiologists can identify APD and assess the severity with a unique pure-tone threshold assessment, that is specific to Filtered Sound Training. Evaluation of such an assessment can only be done by an FST practitioner when used for personalizing the sound training therapy.
